See the Rhythm: The Art of Ya'qub Shabazz
Whitman Works Company is proud to present a new exhibition of the works of Ya'qub Shabazz of East Rochester, NY. These series of wood carvings and paintings are an introspection to the energy and life of African heritage as well as the artist's experiences growing up in south Chicago. Many of these works are the visualizations of prose and poetry writings by Mr. Shabazz. These incredible works will be on display in the Whitman Works Company Gallery from February 8th until March 3rd, 2018. Please join us in celebrating his work and vision.
About the artist:
Ya’qub Shabazz (Sankofa Studios) was born and raised on Chicago’s South Side where he absorbed a wide range of experiences that would become the inspiration for much of his artistic expression. A former case manager (for returning prisoners and youth offenders in Wisconsin), Ya’qub witnessed a cultural void that inspired his entrance into the world of painting and woodcarving. He received his BA in Sociology from Nazareth College and spends a great deal of time writing and exploring the culture and traditions of African culture (both on the continent and in the Diaspora). This exploration is reflected in, his paintings, his woodcarvings, and his sketches.
